11/10 Days Till Christmas

Our kids are unforgiving.

We had a small party on Friday night and found ourselves having such a good time we didn’t go to bed until after 2am.  Bella was up at 4am, Oliver was up at 6am.  Saturday night we had another Christmas gathering, we debating even going.  We had already lined up a sitter and paid for the dinner and drinks, so we went.  We called it an early night and were home by 10:30pm.  Bella proceeded to be up from that time until 1am, and then Oliver was up at 5am.

We are ruined.  Is it our own fault for having a late night?  I guess so, but it still seems kind of depressing that we can’t have a few nights of fun for ourselves.  I’m sure it’s just bad timing, but it really stinks.

12 Days Till Christmas

Bella wanted to show off her presents she made for the teachers.

IMG_0240IMG_0246IMG_0250

It’s a potpourri mix that is made with fresh ingredients and supposed to last for weeks.  I made one up for myself and have been burning it for the past couple of days.  I’m excited to see if it really will last for a couple of weeks as it does smell divine.

And back to Bella.  She also wanted to point out her chair, and how loud the fabric is on it.  She wanted to know why I haven’t recovered it yet.

IMG_0253IMG_0267

It’s coming Bella, once I make some decisions on the kitchen that is!

Oliver wanted to show you what happens when mom tries to get things done while he is around.

IMG_0270IMG_0271

I was baking in the kitchen and Oliver was hanging out and getting into the pantry.  He happened to find a bag of crushed graham crackers and proceeded to dump them out all over the floor.

Enter doggie vacuums.

IMG_0272

Although it looks like mom is still going to have to get a bunch from under the fridge that the dogs couldn’t quite reach.

And I’ll leave you with this picture.

IMG_0273

It perfectly captures Oliver’s naughty but nice behavior.  He thinks it’s funny to lift objects up over his head and say “Ohhhh Ohhhh”.  Which we believe he is saying “Oww” because that is what comes out of our mouths when he throws things at us.  I don’t think he does it to be mean and hurt us, but because he thinks our reactions are funny to him.  So we have to somehow curb his behavior of throwing things by not reacting to it.  I will let you know how it goes.

13 Days Till Christmas

These next couple of days everyone is getting clothes.  I can say that because Jesse opened up his gift last night.  Oliver and Bella are next, and well they can’t read, so it won’t be ruined for them.

I got around to finishing a small project.  I call it my homage to Schindler’s List.

IMG_0222

Does anyone know why it’s a homage to Schindler’s List?  Needless to say the colored balloon photo of Oliver was supposed to come in black and white.  It was a mistake and they are currently correcting it and getting me a new one.  I must say besides having to wait 20 minutes to speak with a  person, Shuttlerfly has great customer service.

IMG_0225IMG_0226IMG_0227IMG_0232IMG_0233

Some day I would like to get photos on this wall.

IMG_0234IMG_0235

Even though we would have to rent a tall step ladder, or use the extension ladder to hang the photos, I think we need to have about 3 more years of experiences before we have photos to fill the walls. So don’t stress too much yet Jesse!

14 Days Till Christmas

Today I interrupt our advent schedule to talk about happiness.

I ponder the question of happiness quite often.  I think it’s because I feel like I am almost there, being happy I mean, but not quite.  So I ask myself what can I do to change things so I will be happy.

I have seesawed my decision on working versus staying home so many times it isn’t funny.  Although the whole time I have been working.  I feel like this is a source of unhappiness.  Working doesn’t make me unhappy.  In fact when the week is going good, the sitter is lined up, the kids are healthy, we are somewhat sleeping through the night, I enjoy working.  But that only seems to happen 25% of the time.  The rest of the time I am juggling sick kids, no sleep, doctors appointments, school functions, sitter’s own schedule, and it doesn’t make me very productive at work.  In all fairness my boss hasn’t actually put any pressure on me.  It’s all self inflicted that I am not working fast enough, being productive enough, getting in enough hours.  But it’s stress for me nonetheless.

The alternative would be to not work and then not have a sitter for the kids.  I think this would drive me crazy.

According to Einstein the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expect a different outcome.  That is definitely me.

We include Bella in everything.  Even if she doesn’t like it.  I struggle with the decision to leave her behind for an activity because I think it would be mean.  Yet at the same time I ask myself if our family was meant to miss out on things because of Bella.  I don’t think that is the answer either.  So at some point we have to walk the fine line of including her in some things and getting her care at home for other things so we can get out and enjoy things that she wouldn’t enjoy anyways.

Just last month, the grandparents were in town and we had been invited to a one year old’s birthday party.  We debated about going, who to take, etc.  In the end we decided to leave Bella home with the grandparents' and take Oliver with us.

In a way it was freeing.  To see the world as other people must see the world when they take their kids to activities.  Not having to worry about packing Bella a separate special meal, not having to make room for her wheelchair and then a place for her to lay down when she is tired of sitting.  Not to have people staring at you and feeling sorry for you. To get to actually enjoy activities because your child can participate in them.

IMG_0508IMG_0509

Today I think the bus driver actually felt sorry for me as I put Bella on the bus.  The bus gets here, they lower down the ramp, I put Bella on the lift and the bus drivers are always nice and talk to Bella.  As they pull Bella off the lift and onto the bus itself I always say goodbye to Bella and wave and tell her to have a good day at school.  Bella never reacts.  She hardly even ever looks at me.  The bus driver always says “Tell Mommy goodbye”.  And today after she said that, and Bella was off in her own world, the bus driver looked at me with eyes that said…I’m sorry she can’t even look at you.  I smiled and told the bus driver to have a nice day and then I turned around and went back into the house as my heart had a little pull of sadness and I wondered where life with Bella is going to lead me to?

Of course as I headed back into the house there was a little boy eating his graham cracker and watching out the window (it was cold this morning and he had just gotten up so I didn’t have time to get him dressed).  And when I opened up the door he was already at the front door wanting to be held and then waving to the bus and saying “bye bye” as Bella and the bus pulled away.

In the end I don’t really have any answers to my questions of happiness.  I don’t want to give the impression that I am extremely unhappy, because that’s not true.  I just know that I need to change things up because this hamster wheel that I’m walking on isn’t going to get me to my destination.

15 Days Till Christmas

Are you the type that likes to change things up?  We seem to be constantly rearranging and trying to figure out what works best in our house.  This weekend we rethought our family room.  We didn’t actually tackle any new projects, we just completely flipped the room around.

Here are some random shots of the room before we changed things up.  Even one to remind you what it looked like before we painted it this summer.

Here was this weekend’s mid-change photo.

And now it’s been flip-flopped around.

IMG_0200IMG_0195IMG_0197

It really seems to open everything up.  Can you believe it honestly took us one whole day to make this change?  Mostly due to the amazing amount of cables and wires we have to run our television and stereo.  And we still have some touch of painting to do…I’m sure Jesse is hoping that it gets done very soon.

16 Days Till Christmas

Today Bella got to open a handmade gift from mom.  This is another one of those things I saw on the internet and pinned months and months ago.  I was going to make it for her birthday, and then instead got the crawler.  Which the last time I put her in it, she went crazy and was doing a great job with lifting her head.  Anyways, I finally got around to making it.

Jesse took a look at it this evening and said “That’s it.  It just looks like a bunch of lights.  Weren’t you supposed to be following something you found on the internet?”

I thought it turned out good.

Here is what it looks like in the dark.

Now the question is…Can Bella fall asleep with this on?

17 Days Till Christmas

Today Oliver got a play Christmas tree that I made out of felt.

002

The point of this tree is so that he has “ornaments” to take off and put back on.  He enjoys taking them off.

IMG_0187

IMG_0189

He enjoys putting them on Bella and myself to decorate our clothing.

IMG_0188

He enjoys putting them in his mouth.

IMG_0190

He even thinks the pieces should be thrown away.

IMG_0191

But they certainly don’t go back on the tree.  So the art of decorating the tree is lost on him.  Maybe next year……….
